Bartolome Island
This is a relatively small island off the south eastern coast of Santiago in Sullivan Bay. The geology is interesting in that there are a large number of cinder cones and spatter cones, giving a major part of the island a 'moonscape' appearance.

Bartolome is an extinct volcano that has many cones in various stages of erosion, many craters scattered around and lava tubes in different states of preservation. The crystal clear water surrounding the island allows visitors to see even more cones submerged near the shore.

It is possible to climb to the summit of a volcano (now inactive) to obtain a magnificent view. There are steps to the summit both to make the climb easier and also to protect the volcanic ash from erosion by climbers. (Source:Galapagos Conservation Trust)


*Volcanoes of Galapagos
Perhaps the most striking feature of the Galápagos is not its wildlife nor its history, but the extraordinary diversity of volcanic landscapes. From the simple symmetry of Sombrero Chino (the aptly named Chinese Hat) to the blasted lunar landscape of Bartolome, it is obvious that here nature can be at its most violent. The initial reaction of even the least observant voyager -- and if Darwin was anything, it was observant -- is justified: Every island in the Galápagos archipelago is volcanic in origin.

Like Hawaii, the Galápagos sit on a "hot spot" in the earth's crust, a structural weakness where magma flows through the solid plate, building volcanoes as it does so. Concurrently, the plates of the earth's crust -- in this case, the Nazca Plate -- float on the mantle, slowly moving in the process known as Plate Tectonics. As a result, the volcanoes of the hot spot seem to appear in different locations over time. In the case of the Hawaiian chain, the newest island (the Big Island of Hawaii, with its active volcanoes Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea) is the easternmost, and the oldest and most dormant islands are to the west.

In the case of the Galápagos, the oldest islands are to the east, such as San Cristóbal and Española, and even older islands now submerged beneath the Pacific. The existing islands in the archipelago are thought to be at most five million years old, but still older islands may be submerged as much as 2,000 meters below the surface -- over a mile underwater, and some nine million years old. On the other hand, the newest island is the most volcanically active: Fernandina, where eruptions have occurred as recently as 1994, and the island itself may be only hundreds of thousands of years old.

Most of the islands of the Galápagos are formed around single shield volcano cones. Shield volcanoes -- so named for their gentle slope and regular shape -- are formed when the magmatic flow is basaltic, or low in water content. Basalt flows slowly, in broad lava flows, building on itself in a process of accretion; the dark reddish flanks of Galápagos volcanoes such as Fernandina are indicative of basaltic content. Basalt flows much more easily than silica-rich lava such as andesite, which forms sharper cone-shaped peaks such as those of the Cascades (Mt. Rainier or the recently truncated Mt. St. Helens), Mt. Fuji in Japan, or the high volcanic peaks of the Ecuadorian Andes (Cotopaxi and Chimborazo). Andesite, in fact, is named for the Andes, where it was first scientifically described.

While the solitary volcanic peak of its islands is typical of the archipelago, at least one island is composed of more than a single volcano. Isabela is made up of six volcanoes, five of them recently active, which have merged together as their flows spread to meet one another. Some day Fernandina, most active of all volcanoes in the islands, may expand its slopes to fill the Bolivar Canal and join with Isabela to create the largest of all Galápagos islands -- at 2,000 square miles, still only half the size of Hawaii.

Hi Selen,
I think I see the location of your beach photo. Just of the right if the green. The contrast between the different colored soil and the blue sky and ocean is really wonderful. That small forrest in the center is a great eye catcher. The patterns in the rock in the FG are very interesting. I would have liked to see a slightly stonger FG interest.
