Ash plumes rising in the air from the Tungurahua Volcano on 24.04.2007. Image captured from the plane. I hesitated a lot before uploading this one as the image quality is not that good, but still I like this photo, hope you enjoy it.

"IG reported that during 17-18 April, Strombolian activity from Tungurahua was observed; incandescent material was ejected about 500 m above the summit and blocks descended down the flanks. Lahars carring large blocks NW down the Mandur gorge caused a road closing on 19 April. During 17-24 April, ash plumes rose to altitudes of 5.5-9 km (18,000-29,500 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W and N. Ashfall was reported from areas mainly to the N, NW, W, and SW during 17, 19, 21-22, and 24 April. On 23 April, lahars were observed in several gorges to the NW. Clouds occasionally inhibited views of the summit during the reporting period." (from Volcano Discovery News)

Elevation: 5,023 metres (16,479 feet)
Location: Ecuador
Range: Andes
Coordinates: 1°28′1″S, 78°26′30″W
Type: Stratovolcano (active)
Age of rock: Holocene (Gomez 1994)
Last eruption: 2007 (continuing)
First ascent: 1873 by Alphons Stübel and Wilhelm Reiss

Tungurahua, Quichua tunguri (throat), rahua (fire): "Throat of Fire") is an active stratovolcano located in the Cordillera Central of Ecuador. The volcano gives name to the province of Tungurahua. Volcanic activity restarted in 1999 and is ongoing as of 2007 with a major eruption on August 16 2006.

Location
Tungurahua (5,023 m) is located in the Cordillera Central of the Andes of central Ecuador, 140 km (87 miles) south of the capital Quito. Nearby notable mountains are the Chimborazo (6,267 m) and El Altar (5,319 m). It rises above the small thermal springs town Bańos (1,800 m) which is located at its foot 5 km to the north. Other nearby towns are Ambato (30 km to the northwest) and Riobamba (30 km to the southwest). Tungurahua is part of the Sangay National Park.

Glacier
With its elevation of 5,023 m Tungurahua just over tops the snow line (about 4,900 m). Tungurahua's top is snow covered and did feature a small summit glacier which melted away after the increase of volcanic activity in 1999.

Hola Selen,
interesante y espectacular momento,
detalles y composición excelentes,
saludos

çok güzel bir ortamda yakalanmış harika ve degişik bir fotograf ellerine sağlık selen.

Hello Selen,
Image quality might not be the best I've seen from you sofar, but I'm glad you did upload this unique shot.
How many people can tell that they have seen smoke coming out a vulcano above the cloud deck flying in a plane?
Not that many I suppose and less of them have ever made a picture of it!!!
It's a beautiful image and I love it.
Thanks for sharing.
Kindest regards,
Harry

Wow Selen, you are our photo journalist in the air. This is why you should never store your camera overhead. Very nicely seen and captured on your part.

Thanks, John

Hi Selen

Why did you hesitate?! This sort of photography depends a lot on luck and chance - this is wonderful - I am really envious!

James

A shot we are not going to see too often. Image quality isn't all what makes a picture good! And this one is good! TFS, Klaus

Hey great shot Selen, and excellent contribution to TN. So what if the quality isn't perfect, its a unique moment witness by only a few. Here you illustrate the power of nature, hidden from below by clouds.
Excellent work TFS.

Chris

Cool photo even though the quality is low. I was in Ecuador July 2006 when Tungurahua had its largest eruption since '88. My husband and I were backpacking in the area and felt the ground shaking one night -- it was only when we were back in Quito to fly out that we realized we had felt the first rumblings of this major eruption!

I'm a bit jealous of your view. It must have been spectacular! Thanks for capturing it and posting!

Hi Selen,
As you tell, quality is not good, but the image is very nice to me because looks like a paint. The volcano "raising" over the clouds and emaanting a big plume is surrealistic, very, very nice.
Good job
Hernán

Hi Selen,
Extraordinary image.
Great content of course.
Composed very well and colourful. A photo don't have to be technical perfect to be interesting IMalwayshumbleO...

Hi Selen,
wow...well worth posting. The image quality is not an issue at all, for this is a rare and beautiful sight that transcends the need for a perfect finish. A wonderful sight.

It is understandable because of the planes window, and movement, but the view is spectacular, and the timing even better. It must be a bit unnerving seeing this so close, and while in air.
Nice work Selen!

Merhaba Selen,
Sıklıkla görülemeyecek bir manzara.Pozlama ve kadraj 4/4 lük.Ellerine sağlık!

Hola Claudine.
Una imagen estremecedora al pensar en el material que lanza cada erupción volcánica al aire con el peligro que ello supone para las poblaciones.
Buen documento amiga y mejor nota.
Hasta pronto, JL.

You did well Selen by putting that spectacular picture! Took from a plane you did a miracle here! Mine are a lot worst than that!

Very impressing picture of this volcano and very interesting notes!

Merhaba Selen,
This is a fantastic capture of a historic moment. I have no complaints about the quality. But, instead of 50 KB, you could save closer to 200 KB for better quality. Also, shoot wide-open from the plane for highest shutter speed, as well as shallow depth of field so that the gunk on the window does not show. Your focus is at infinity with no foreground so you don't need any depth. Selamlar,
Hakan

Hi Selen,

impressive view! I like the great result coming out from its essentiality.
