This is a tree in the Tambopata rainforest loaded with the hanging nests of the russet-backed oropendula (Psarocolius angustifrons). The "oro" refers to the bright yellow on the tail. There are 13 species of oropendulas, all of them are colonial breeders, often polygamous. They have a burbling complex musical song comprised of a dozen or so pure tones, resembling the sound of dripping water. You hear them before you see them.
This was a difficult shot because of the backlighting. Since I was over 75 m away (using the 18x optical zoom) there was no way to employ fill-in flash. Consequently, the oropendula perched in the upper center doesn't reveal its bright yellow tail and bill very well. |
