Yellow-Crowned Parrot
Amazona ochrocephala

33-36 cm

* Amazona parrots are large green parrots of humid forest. Most show a red or orange speculum on wing, visible in flight. May be seen as pairs, or flocks of varying size. Often fly high overhead. Readily identified to genus in flight by rapid but very shallow wingbeats and square-tipprd tail. Very vocal. Each specieshas a characteristic flight call by which it may be identified, but also give varied, complex and less distinctive "conversational" vocalizations. Frequently are kept in captivity...

Uncommon to fairly common and widespread in humid forest of eastern lowlands below 800 m. Frequently occurs with, but typically outnumbered by, the larger Mealy Parrot. Extent of yellow on crown variable, but always conspicuous in the field. Smaller than Mealy, with greener plumage, narrower orbital ring of bare skin and different voice.

Voice: Flight call a characteristic, mellow, rolling "urGWOW" or ("bow wow"), distinctive among Amazonian parrots.

Native to: Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia
