Great Egret
Ardea alba

*The Great Egret Ardea alba, also known as the Great White Egret, or Common Egret, is a wading egret, found in most of the tropical and warmer temperate parts of the world, although it is very local in southern Europe and Asia. It is called Kōtuku in New Zealand. It is sometimes confused with the Great White Heron in Florida, which is a white morph of the Great Blue Heron.

The Great Egret is a large bird with all white plumage that can reach 101 cm in height and weigh up to 950 g. It is only slightly smaller than the Great Blue or Grey Herons. Apart from size, the Great Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet. It also has a slow flight, with its neck retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks.

The Great Egret feeds in shallow water or drier habitats, spearing fish, frogs or insects with its long, sharp bill. It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim. It is a common species, usually easily seen.

The Great Egret is partially migratory, with northern hemisphere birds moving south from areas with cold winters. It breeds in colonies in trees close to large lakes with reed beds or other extensive wetlands. It builds a bulky stick nest. The call at breeding colonies is a loud croaking "cuk cuk cuk".

splendida composizione per questi due bellissimi aironi bianco maggiore che risaltano sui magnifici colori dell'acqua accarezzata dalla luce del tramonto, la scelta della posizione centrale per gli aironi accentua la sensazione di quiete di questa bellissima immagine.

Hi Selen,
Outstanding shot and the lighting is so beautiful and magical. the Great Egret couple stands tall and elegant and I luike the colours contrasts here. This place seems so charming and the setting sun makes it look even more majestic. Very neat and sharp image with perfect DOF and POV.

I like this picture full of atmosphere very much. The two Egrets are superb, so well highlighted by thos fabulous sunset and the colours it generates. The silghtly blurred reflections in the tiny waves of the water surface add to the value of the picture. Wildlife at its best...

very much like impressionst painting, i appreciate your approach to get this beautiful one.
the dark one third portion of the frame is taking away what the rest has achieved.
did a workshop just to crop that negative portion, hope you don't mind, this is just my point of view. tfs.

This is a fascinating image Selen!
To capture two Great White Egrets in the evening light and manage the light so well when it was against you is an achievement. The to catch these two egrets in such a fine pose together with great sharpness makes this a marvellous capture.

Hi Selen.
I think this title would be nice too: Great sunset and two Great Egrets. Even without these amazing birds picture would be perfect. However with pair of strong and beautifully creatures shot is simply Great. Superb pose of the bird, wonderful mirror reflections and precise wide DOF and details of the main scene. Bravo and TFS.

Hello Selen,

Very nice shot of those great egret by sunset! I really like the reflection and the very clear and focus birds. The horizon is (as it is to be ;-) ) perfectly horizontal! I would have removed the human thing in the bg to keep the image in a more natural mood.

Very pretty shot the illumination is mysterious as I cannot figure out how you got the birds to be exposed so well without the flash in the low lighting? Great one Selene. Never mind, I just read the bottom of the note depicting the flash extender.

amazing lighting on this picture. The framing is good too - bet you had to be careful to make sure the egrets' heads didn't get framed above the water line.
