The Colca Canyon of southern Peru is the deepest canyon in the world...1200 m deep...twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The name "colca" refers to small holes in the cliffs in the valley and canyon used in Inca and pre-Inca times to store food, such as potatoes and as tombs for important people. At the Cruz del Condor the majestic Andean condors (Vultur gryphus) rise on thermals early in the morning before heading higher in the mountains to search for carrion. This one is a juvenile...adults have black plumage, red heads, and fluffy white neck collars. A dozen or so soared back and forth over the canyon for about 15 minutes...then just disappeared. So, it's best to get there early (before 7h30)if you want to see them.
I filmed this bird with my new Olympus 550UZ with its 18x optical zoom. The camera is a little slow, and the image quality is lower than that of my Canon SP3, but that 18x with double image stabilizers compensates. |
