| This was a spider whose scientific name I do not yet know. A female with a very valiant male risking his life for his species... is it love. ... or lust? |

Wonderful spider! Poor little spider... but the spider is hungry after all. Thanks for sharing! Cheers Josh Lewis.

Hello Peter and welcome to TN !
This is a very interesting picture, as it shows the extreme size difference between male and female - poor little male ! :-) There are some nice details on the picture, like the hairs on the legs, and the light blue BG makes the spiders stand out very nicely. Sorry, I can't help for ID, I do not know many things about spiders. Anyway, well done !
Valerie.
I believe it is a Argiope genous spider and the species is probably bruennichi maybe a male. The prominent zigzag shape called the stabilimentum, or web decoration, featured at the centre of the orb is of uncertain function, though it may be to attract insects.
I agree with Sandu, they are known for this type of dimorphism. This is nature and sexual selection rules! The smaller the male is the more its adaptable for the sake of next generations
