Phalacrocorax gaimardi "Chuita", "Cormoran patas rojas"

Es un ave marina, frecuente en las islas y en los acantilados costeros. Tiene una talla aproximada de 60 cm y una coloración llamativa y peculiar que la hace inconfundible con otros cormoranes. La sobre pesca de la anchoveta (Engraulis ringens), su principal alimento en el Perú, ha hecho que su población disminuya en las ultimas décadas. Sin embargo, en los últimos 4 años ( a partir del 2002) las condiciones frías del mar peruano han ayudado a la recuperación de la anchoveta y, por tanto, ha facilitado su lenta recuperación poblacional.

Esta especie anida en acantilados verticales rodeados de mar muy turbulento, evitando así el acceso de los depredadores. Normalmente pone 2 o 3 huevos, en especial a finales de la primavera.

Se distribuye a lo largo del litoral peruano, Chile y sur de Argentina.
