Nice shot, but a little bit overexposed, try setting you Exposure Value (EV) down a notch or two when shooting in bright conditions. I would suggest a setting of -0.07 to -1.00 initially.
The bird is a night heron, extremely tough to get a shot of one around my neck of the woods.

John:
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax looking very odd in intermediate plumage between juvenile and adult (full adult plumage in third year). I like the composition, but it's a touch OE around the bird's feet and other highlight areas. This is obviously a consequence of trying to balance the deep shadow with the sunlit parts of the shot, but "blown out" highlights can't be retrieved with digital imagery. Slight under-exposure can always be corrected.
Unusual shot - thanks.
