Red-tail Boa
(Boa constrictor constrictor)

These are the prettiest of the patterned boas, well in my opinion anyway. He was very curious about me, his tongue was flickering out a lot, this is their way of smelling and detecting their food and no I was not on the menu that day. I'm saving me for the anaconda, yep!. ;)

Classification and Range:
The boa constrictor belongs to the family Boidae, which includes seven genera of boas, four genera of sand boas, and eight genera of pythons.* Though some of the 64 species in the family are less than 3.3 feet (1 m) in length, others are the largest snakes in the world; a green anaconda was recorded as being 37 feet (11.3 m) long!

Boa constrictor ranges through much of Central and South America, from Mexico to Argentina, and to the Lesser Antilles and other islands.

Habitat:
Boa constrictors live from sea level to 3,300 feet (1,000 m) elevation, in tropical rainforests, semi-deserts, rocky hillsides, savannas, and near cultivated fields and homes. They climb well, and those in forests may spend a lot of time in trees. Though boa constrictors can swim, most don’t spend significant time in water. During winter, in cooler parts of their range, they may become somewhat torpid, without being completely inactive

Food Habits:
Boas devour a variety of prey in the wild - amphibians, lizards, other snakes, birds and mammals.

Dear Paul, a couple of questions:

a) did you use flash?
b) did you use the blur tool on the bg?
c) was the shot taken in the wild? If so, how far were you from the boa?

As for the photo, a fantastic one.

Stunning sharpness, great "pose" and pov. I like colors too. Very informative note.

Congratulations on everything.

Paul,

Very nice fill flash. I would like to have seen a little less flash and a little more ambient light to give more to the habitat. However rainforests are tough.

You are correct, that is a damn nice looking boa! I've only ever found ugly ones to photograph. Of course, I've never been south of Panama.

Exceptional view of this snake - much as I don't like them, this really is an excellent image!!

Beautiful shot, you got excellent depth to support the serpent's coiled form, caught the tongue out, what more could you ask for, nice work.

Greg

Hello Paul,
It's an excellent picture. Details, framing and everything else seems to be perfect. I like the pose of the snake a lot. What is quite interesting here is the fact that every of three parts of the snake squeezing the branch seem to look quite different.
VERY WELL DONE!

Wow, Paul. That is a rather close encounter. : )
Great capture of a snake in the wild. Very sharp details, fantastic DOF, and beautiful colors and markings on this boa, especially on the tail. Bravo, and TFS. : )

superb capture I like the pose and dof used. I have to agree a little less flash may have improved the shot
Geoff
