Caiman crocodilus

This time a beautiful young Spectacled caiman from the Yarapa River (a pristine tributary of the Amazon River in Peru), again from one of the night expeditions we took with the skiffs of our vessel.


*ID: Large, brown or olive-brown, often with wide black bars on body and tail; to 2m, although most are smaller. Spectacled refers to the bony ridges between the eyes; crocodiles lack these.

Habitat: Forests, in or near streams, swamps, ponds, lakes and rivers.

Region: Amazon Lowlands

Crocodilians are distributed over most tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. 5 species are found in Peru, but the one most likely to be seen is the Spectacled Caiman, probably the most abundant crocodilian in the New World. This species is mid-sized, occasionally reaching a lenght of about 2.5 mt. Peru's caimans occupy inlland creeks, ponds, lakes and rivers.

Crocodilians often forage at night, when they can be seen on the surface of the water; their eyes reflect light when you shine a flashlight on them.

Many of the Latin American crocodilians were hunted heavily during the first half of the 20th century. Today only the Spectacled Caiman is hunted in large numbers, particularly in the Pantanal region of Brazil. All crocodilians are listed by the international CITES agreements, preventing or highly regulating trade,and their numbers have been steadily rising during the past 20 years. Nevertheless, most of the 22 crocodilian species are still threatened or endangered.

I love reptiles too much not to pick this out of all the beautiful shots i've missed from you recently :))
This is an outstanding portrait, in which some of the distinctive features of this caiman really stand out.
The details are impeccable and the texture on the skin and especially that eye is fantastic!
Excellent side POV and good flash management, too!

Nice shot. the eye looks so lovely and dynamic. Stands out well against the dark bg.

And this time a perfect close-up and portrait of much more "terrible" species ;> I like fantastic details and great control of DOF - details and light are very good!
I am also a little surprised because I see that you used a field guide written by David Pearson from USA, my colleague, and specialist in Cicindelidae! I had no idea that he is an author of wildfile guides too :)
