Guanaco
(Lama guanicoe)

I just got back from Peru and thought I would share some images. :)

Geographic Range:
Found from southern Peru down the Andean zone of Chile and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego and Navarino Island. There is also a population in far western Paraguay.

Habitat:
Guanacos inhabit grasslands and shrublands from sea level to 4,000m. Occasionally they winter in forests.

Terrestrial Biomes:
desert or dune ; savanna or grassland ; mountains .

Physical Description:
Mass
115 to 140 kg
(253 to 308 lbs)

Behavior:
There are three types of social groups: family groups, male troops, and solitary males. A family band is composed of a single breeding male, several females, and offspring. Males limit the size of their group by driving out young males of six to twelve months and driving off males and sometimes females trying to enter the group. Males defend a territory that the group resides on, and the territory is demarcated by large communal defecation piles. Only about 18% of males are in a family group; the others are in bands or solitary. The all-male bands are generally made up of young males. Males in these herds learn fighting ability through play fights. The solitary males tend to be mature males looking for females or herds to take over.

Food Habits:
Guanacos are herbivores that can inhabit dry areas and forego drinking for long periods. They are versatile foragers, both browsing and grazing on grasses and plants.

Conservation Status:
Guanacos have had their numbers drastically reduced due to human pressures of habitat encroachment, habitat destruction, and hunting. In addition, climatic changes are also blamed for decreases in population size and range.

Adult guanacos can run at speeds of up to 56km/hr.

Hi Paul
Great animal, great pose, and great capture. I must say, for the wrong image it looks pretty good. This animal has a very interesting expression on its face. Maybe its got something to do with the way its lifting its tail. Was there any follow-up shot that can reveal the outcome?
Good composition with the rocks in the foreground and the lama edged off against the sky light. The colours are lovely and well saturated. Exposure and lighting is very well handled, and nice sharp details with good DOF.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Paul, welcome back! Now to see some exciting shots from Peru.
I love your Llama's pose here, so upright and inquisitive at the same time! Cute tail too. He looks very good standing there against the blue of the sky. Nice and sharp too. Well captured, TFS

HI Paul, welcome back. Lovley shot of this Lama. Very nice focus and it's looks great against the blue sky. Very well done.

Hi Paul,
the pose is just beautiful, and so are the earthy colours against the clear blue sky.
Details are crisp & clear.
Composition is classically well balanced. Maybe just a little bit too much space at the right border to the back of the Guanaco - but that's a matter of taste.
Picture gives a very good impression of the Guanaco and its habitat. The face appearing to "smile", the cute shadow of the head on the back plus the playfully curved tail silhouette add a very pleasant and quite funny note.
Excellent contribution! Thanks!
Peter
