This is the second time I post pictures of these tiny insects that we call "Chicharritas" or "Jump leaves".

I wanted to post it again because I could finally shoot one of her nymphs in their pre-reproductive phase.

The photo on the left you can see the photo of the nymph who soon becomes an insect like the picture on the right. The plant where the insects live, is in my garden and, thanks to that, I hope to capture the moment of transformation and able to share with you. I keep watching the nymph!

MORE:

The cicadélidos are also called chicharritas or saltahojas and often beautiful color patterns, are elongated and measure between 3 and 15 mm in length. The adults and nymphs, like other members of the superfamily Cicadoidea have short antennae and a long bristle tarsi of legs with 3 segments. This family differs from the other families close by the warm hold of the long hind legs with one or more rows of spines arranged longitudinally.

It is estimated a minimum of several thousand species in Costa Rica cicadélidos in hundreds of genres. Although many species of agricultural importance have been described, most of the wild yet have names. There are over 50 subfamilies in the world. Many of these species have very wide distribution range to the north and south. However cicadélidos that are common in fields of crops, many species are wildlife habitats.

The chicharritas feed exclusively on sap from leaves and stems of many plant species, using the stylus from its sucking mouth parts. In most food places to work a muscle that pumps large quantities of sap which draws its nourishment and energy. While feeding also eliminated or excreted through the anus substances that are absorbed in the ex or not you are useful. The species that feed on phloem sap and excrete a sugary liquid which feed on xylem sap excreted large amounts of water. Others feed on mesophyll cells of leaves and very little liquid to drink. Unfortunately little is known about the relationship of most species with host plants, but some are well known for their specificity. Cicadélidos Some are well known for its ability to transmit viruses and bacteria that cause plant diseases (eg, fine streak virus Maize, transmitted by Dalbulus maidis). Most members of this family produce sounds of low intensity and can be transmitted through the substrate. Can be emitted by vibration of a bodies called timbales are at the base of the abdomen or through and in a similar way as do the horse mackerel, but they lack the air bag for the high intensity of sound in the horse mackerel. Females have an ovipositor with which lay their eggs beneath the surface of the tissue of plants. The cicadélidos develop rapidly and can have up to 6 generations or more in a year. Food and Drinks are the nymphs of the same plants and in the same way as adults. They go through 5 nymphal stages to become adults who can then live a few weeks to several months.

Hola Jesús,
A fine duo of two species of Leaf Hoppers, the one on the left being an immature nymph.
Both images are sharp and well coloured illustrations that would allow an expert entomoligst that specialises in Cicadelidae to give you an ID as both are great macros.
Thanks and best regards,
Ivan

Sinceramente creo que es un bello trabajo Jesus, tanto documental como artísticamente por lo bien que aplicaste la técnica. No conocía esta especie. Buen contraste insecto-vegetal.

Hi Jesus,
A beautiful leafhopper and also the young one is beautiful too. Excellent composition and sharp details in both the frames. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Jesus,
This is a great pair of images of this ornate leaf hopper.
They are both well exposed and from good POVs
I like how you've put the shooting data in the corner, although I usually prefer to see no writing and no frame.
Very nice shots though.
TFS
Steve

Hi Jesus.
One more wonderful collage and presentation of a very cute insect. Especially I like right picture. Its soft lighting and impressive 3D-looking. Light of the left shot is harsh a bit and that is why flat. However, texture of the leaf is ultimate. Great macro work. Bravo and TFS.
Alexei.
