This bird really is not pretty, but we must respect it because it makes an excellent health in our ecosystems, consuming the remains of dead animals constantly.

This "Zamuro" was photographed during a hike yesterday (holiday in our country) in the company of my teenager, it was he who warned me about the presence of this "quiet" individual, located on the edge of a cliff near a trail we were following in an area without much vegetation on the mountain.

The black vulture allowed him to take a few pictures, before launching into the ravine near-free fall and then rise vertically for height, a true master of the air.
Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Aves Order: Incertae sedis(disputed) Family: Cathartidae Genus: Coragyps (Saint-Hilaire, 1853) Species: C. atratus
Binomial name Coragyps atratus

The American Black Vulture, Coragyps atratus, also known as the Black Vulture, is a bird in theNew World vulture family whose range extends from the southeastern United States to Central Chileand Uruguay in South America. Although a common and widespread species, it has a somewhat more restricted distribution than its compatriot, the Turkey Vulture, which breeds well into Canada and south to Tierra del Fuego. Despite the similar name and appearance, this species is unrelated to theEurasian Black Vulture. The latter species is an Old World vulture in the family Accipitridae (which includes eagles, hawks, kites and harriers), whereas the American species is a New World vulture. It is the only extant member of the genus Coragyps, which is in the family Cathartidae. It inhabits relatively open areas which provide scattered forests or shrublands. With a wingspan of 1.5 m (5 ft) the American Black Vulture is a large bird though relatively small for a vulture. It has black plumage, a featherless, grayish-black head and neck, and a short, hooked beak.
The American Black Vulture is a scavenger and feeds on carrion, but will also eat eggs or kill newborn animals. In areas populated by humans, it also feeds at garbage dumps. It finds its meals either by using its keen eyesight or by following other (New World) vultures, which possess a keen sense of smell. Lacking a syrinx—the vocal organ of birds—its only vocalizations are grunts or low hisses. It lays its eggs in caves or hollow trees or on the bare ground, and generally raises two chicks each year, which it feeds by regurgitation. In the United States, the vulture receives legal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. This vulture also appeared in Mayan codices.

hello Jesus,
What an impressive bird! Your shot is well taken, even if a little against the light. I like how you framed the picture and beautiful to have included the rock in the front. Great and even greater because it has been taken in the wild. Bravo!

Hello Jesús,

By most standards probably not a pretty bird, or maybe it is the behaviour that make us think so...
This is a fine capture and a good pose, well framed and with good details in the difficult dark plumage!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Jesus,

The close-up view is showing with precision the details and colors of the American Black Vultures. The subject is well framed. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Jesus,

Beautiful capture, excellent portrait of the Black Vulture. I'm not sure if I ever saw this interesting specie here on TN. Lights didn't help You for making this shot, but You've done the job very well. Bravo.

Off-topic: I didn't forget the fungi pics which You sent me, I'll send them further to Marco, because I have no other idea about the ID.

Best regards from Hungary, László
