Hello TN friends!

Photographing insects in difficult light conditions, with a compact camera steady in the hand, often rather difficult for the experts just like me. That's why every time I have the opportunity, I try and document it.

This Cerambycidae, was captured with a severely damp and cloudy, have just finished raining.

Despite the conditions, I did not want to use the flash. Actually wanted to achieve a brightness and color as natural as possible.

I decided to play around with the settings for my compact camera:

Using the maximum aperture that the camera allows me to (F2.8) That makes me a little more complicated approach, but I can provide more light and improve the shutter speed even with very little natural light.

I wanted to use the ISO 100 to avoid the noise of my camera with ISO 200 or 400, I put a little more difficult as the shutter and hold my camera in hand. But I think it's worth testing.

The white balance setting in AUTO mode was frankly bad, appeared bluish leaves and insect took an almost red color, totally different from its actual color. Because of this, I decided to use white balance in manual mode, adjusting mode CLOUDY. With this, the result was quite faithful to the real color.

Finally, adjust the shutter speed to a point where it had a nice view but not on display. 1/125s stayed with the limits of what I usually use for pictures with the camera held by hand, avoiding at same time a moved image.

The result of or above is the photo that I now humbly public. I believe that despite the conditions of capture, can be predicted cloudy and the humidity of the environment, while the colors look natural and sober the whole insect, foliage and flowers.

The post processing involves the corresponding picture to improve the composition and bring the whole framework to give also a hint of relevance.

I hope this information can be useful to people who enjoy the hobby of photography, accompanied by a compact camera.

Taxonomic information Cerambycidos the models published in my previous post, because of that, today I confine myself to the information capture process.

Greetings to all,

Jesus

Hello Jesús,
A fine capture of this attractive Longhorn Beetle.
Good use of a wide aperture in the poor light that still gave you excellent sharpness with almost all the beetle in focus and a fine OOF BG. The lateral POV on the lantana flower buds and the composition are excxellent.
Thanks and best regards,
Ivan

Hi Jesus . This is a Bug i have not seen before so thanks for posting. You have taken this Cerambycidae with sharp focusing and fine detail. Your use of the light has given rich colours. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hola Jesus,
I'm really impressed by the quality of this shot and how you use the full possibilities of your reflex camera. The sharpness on the insect and the colours are perfect. Only some DOF is missing, but it was impossible with this difficult light conditions. Congratulations,
Catherine

Hello Jesus,
Very nice image of the beetle. Good sharpness on the body and legs, pity about the antennae. The DOF at f/2.8 is very small. Thanks.

Hi Jesus,

I love this! Not only is the Longhorned Beetle perfect but the setting and composition are superb. The insect is so sharp with magnificent details and wonderful colors. The position of the long "horns" are very effective. It's so nice to see such great shots from a compact. Have a great rest of the weekend.
