Elephantidae is a family of elefantídeos proboscídeos mammals, great transport, which has three species in the current world, two Africans (Loxodonta sp.) e an Asian (Elephas sp.). It still has the mammoths (Mammuthus sp.), today extinct. Until recently, it was given credit that it had only two alive species of elephants, the elephant-African and the elephant-Asian, a lesser species. However, recent studies of DNA suggest that it had, in the truth, two species of elephant-African: African Loxodonta, of the savannah, and Loxodonta cyclotis, that live in the forests. The elephants are the terrestrial animal greaters of the actualidade weighing up to 12 tons and measuring in average four meters of height.
