This is the first in a mini-series on the sand dunes in Death Valley. The photos in the sequence will go back time, and with each image, we will get closer to the dunes.

When we hear of a sand dune, those in Africa or in the Arabian Peninsula, which can reach heights of 300 meters, come to mind first. The ones in Mojave Desert are related, though they are smaller in scale. Death Valley contains some of the more accessible dunes in the Mojave. The Mesquite Flats sand dunes in the image are located near Stovepipe Wells, which is a small way-station where you are assured to find the most expensive gas in North America. You can see the Grapevine Mountains, which peak at 2,665 meters and lie on the border between California and Nevada, in the backdrop for a sense of scale. In Ref. [1], the following summary is given regarding the formation of sand dunes: “What is needed for dunes to form is a source of sand, wind to winnow the sand and dust from the sand. As the wind bounces the grains along into a drift, the cornice of the drift keeps collapsing into a steep slope called the slip face. That sliding slope is called the angle of repose, which for sand is about 30-35 degrees. In regions where the wind blows steadily from one direction, the dunes are crescent-shaped or linear, and slowly migrate downward.” Here in Death Valley, the wind is more variable, and as you can perhaps tell from the picture, the dune patterns are more complex.

[1] B. Decker and R. Decker, Road Guide to Death Valley National Park, 1999.

Photo note: Spot-metered off the dunes and compensated by +2/3 stops. Mirror locked up to avoid shake at 1/15-sec exposure. Cropped the sky a bit. Added minor contrast and saturation before uploading.

Hi Hakan,
Amazing contrast between the dunes and the blue of the mountains and sky.
Really nice. Great details and composition.
TFS!

Olá Hakan

Belo cenário muito bem captado. As cores são fantásticas, linda composição. Muito bonito trabalho Hakan, meus parabéns!

Abraços,
Vera.

Hi Hakan,
A very contrasting image!
So I think this was not an easy shot for the light metering, due to the bright zones in the same composition than the very dark ones. But you managed pretty well it with the compensation.
I like so much the shadows projected and the soft curves of the sand.
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,
JM

Having just returned from DV I'm wondering what time of day this was shot. I think you are facing north so it must be morning. We didn't get any good morning light when we were there. The dunes look great. Did you add blue to the sky? I just bought the same lens you shot this with. It looks like it works pretty well with the extender. I like the drama here.

Another memorable telephoto landscape image, Hakan. I like the polarizer effect in the sky, though sky colors seem a little artificial. Velvia oversaturation. Perhaps I'm not familiar with the homogeneous lack of cloud in the desert sky. Overall very well done, makes me wanna go there.

HHi Haken,
A masterful job with the exposure and overall composition. Beautiful color saturation with an amazing sense of depth. Great play of light and shadows. Superb camera work!

Hakan, this is another fantastic capture by you.

Excellent saturation and shades of blue. Perfect sharpness.

Besides, an excellent note.

Congratulations.

Hello Hakan!
There was none new picture from you for so long, but as always the presented one is really splendid one! Fantastic composition with very good light in FG showing the beauty of sandy dunes, and a little darkener BG. That is really very climatic photo!
I am not sure, but I think that there is a small oasis in the FG; that adds some details about size of dunes and of course the mountains.
I really like this picture :)
Congratulation and I am waiting for the next one :)
Best greetings,
Radomir

Hello Hakan,
What enchanting effects you have created here in this picture of sand dunes in Death Valley through thoughtful and innovative camera settings, my friend!
The contrasts between four zones of vital colors -- green of the vegetation in the foreground, creamish white of the sand dunes, grayish blue of the mountains and the deep blue of the polarized sky -- are the elements that lend that magical quality to this superb image.
The contrasts between light and shade on the dunes and the mountain also give a three-dimensional look to their salient features.

Classic photography at its best!

Hi Hakan

What a splendid shot! I'm really looking forward for all the photos from this upcoming series from you!
The contrast and colors here are absolutely magnificent!
I really like the way those soft and bright dunes look against those massive and dark rock in the back...i guess one could say there is a double contrast here: colors and texture.
An excellent POV to capture that and also an exceptinal exposure management (i raelly liked teh way you explained that part too i your note).
All-in-all a superb composition!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Hakan,
Very interesting, the three layers of vegetation, dunes and peaks. Quite a forbidding and formidable looking place, but still with it's own beauty. Well executed capture, nice DOF and excellent colours (always so with Velvia :-)). Good post.

Hi Hakan,
I like the different layers and shapes you captured here. The layers in shrubs, dunes, mountains and sky. The shapes in the organic wind swept dunes and the sharp edges mountians.
Excellent work on the exposure, showing great details and a superb range of shadows and highlights.

Hello Hakan,
A fantastic picture. This vast space is well shown in grand style. Perfect sharpness and exposure. Also enjoy reading your informative note. With best regards,

hello hakan!
mighty and beautiful with
nice lightning and fine
colours!
good shot!

Hakan,
Great educative notes.
A lot of green in the F/G. A water hole, possibly?
The white of the dunes, those COLD mountains and the FANTASTIC blue sky reminds me of those classical stories
such as the "Arabian Nights".
Done with a lot of taste. You have class, my friend.!!!
Best regards from Canada from Mario.

A beautiful photo with lovely contrasts. Those dunes are amazing against the backdrop of the mountains and sky. Yours are the kind of photos I would most like to be able to take someday. TFS

Hi Hakan

Wonderful play of light and colour here. The dissected land behind the dunes contrasting wonderfully with the dunes themselves. Exceptional.

The Death Valley and other dunes in the area are formed downwind of the prevailing wind and build up where the air is forced to rise up over the mountains (It cannot lift the sand as it loses speed to rise up). There is strong relationship between the size of the dune and strength of the wind.
