Bufo bufo.
Found over most of Europe, adults are up to 15cm long with females larger than males. The colour can vary from brown to sandy with deep gold or copper eyes. They are found in a wide variety of usually dry habitats and are mainly nocturnal, hiding in one spot throughout the day and emerging at dusk. Unlike frogs, the toad normally walks but can hop when alarmed (can't we all!). Breeding takes place in ponds to which the toads migrate around this time of year in the UK. Tonight we were lucky enough to witness the first night of migration this year with toads heading towards our local mere, counting in excess of 100 creatures heading towards the water. Males usually arrive at the ponds first and stop for several weeks whilst females just visit long enough to find a mate and lay their eggs. Toad spawn (around 3-8000 eggs)is laid in two strings, up to 5mm long which swell to 5-10mm thick. Eggs develop into tadpoles within 2 -3 weeks. Common toads have a lifespan of around 10 years in the wild.
