NEELA KURINJI FLOWERS
Plebophyllum kunthiyannum (old name Strobilanthus kunthiyannum)
These bluish violet flowers locally known as Neela kurinji ( neela means blue ) have a specialty. It blooms once in every 12 years! These plants are common in the Western ghats , especially in Munnar hills, Kerala. In September 2006 the plants are flowered. Lots of Photographers & Botanists from all over the world visited the area. To protect these plants, Govt. of Kerala classified this area as a Wild life Sanctury.
There are 14 varieties in Kurinji family. Some flowers in every 2years; some in every 7 years; some in every 18 years! Only the NEELAKKURINJI variety flowers once in every 12 year & keep regularity. |
