The Butterfly-Plain Tiger:
-------------------------------------
A member of the Monarch Butterfly Family, the Plain Tiger Butterfly is a rich, honey brown colour, with jet black tips on the forewings broken by a prominent white bar. This vivid pattern, coupled with its slow flight, would seem to present an easy target for birds. In fact, its bright colours are a strong warning, and the leisurely flight is designed to ensure that birds notice the colours. Experiments have revealed that captive birds quickly learn to avoid eating plain tigers and apparently transmit this knowledge to other birds. Though a few plain tiger butterflies do get killed, their sacrifice protects the rest of their family - since the birds will never touch another plain tiger.
The Plain Tiger is widespread in the old world tropics and subtropics, ranging from Australasia and China to Arabia and Africa.
Plain Tiger Trivia:
The Plain Tiger captured the interest of an unknown Egyptian artist working in Thebes some 3500 years ago, when he painted a fresco that included seven butterflies: the earliest recognisable butterfly art. The butterfly is still common today in modern Egypt. Entomologist Torben Larsen went further in his article on The Butterflies of Egypt (1994), remarking that '...it is somewhat ironic that the oldest painting of a butterfly should be from Egypt, one of the poorest habitats for butterflies anywhere in the world.'
The Flower- Lantana Rose:
------------------------------------
Lantana Rose on which the Plain Tiger is seen sitting, is a big attraction for the butterflies. In our college campus I have seen a lot many butterflies fluttering on hedges of Lantana.
The Lantana is a commonly grown sun loving flowering annual. These are tough, resilient plants that thrive in hot weather and bloom profusely from spring until frost.
Some cultivars grow to as much as 5 to 6 feet tall, forming large, bushy mounds while others stay low and spreading, reaching up to 4 feet wide, but only 1 to 2 feet in height. Some cultivars are more compact.
Lantanas generally grow rapidly. If plants outgrow their assigned space, they tolerate trimming back well during the growing season. Foliage is coarse, lightly toothed and rough to the touch.
Lantana is valued for its long season of reliable bloom. Many cultivars display multiple colors within each two inch wide disc shaped flower head.
Thanks for stopping by!!!!!!

Well done, Iris! This is a great capture, indeed.
This butterfly, in my opinion, is one of the most spectacular species found extensively in India.

Iris,
As Ram said this is one extensivel found in India. I did some capture yday will post it tomorrow. This is a nice composition.ganesh
Hello Irishues,
This is a nice composition with good colors. The butterfly is a little blurred and I guess that it is coming from this slow shutter speed you used; it must have been moving a bit. Your notes are interesting. We don't have Lantana here. Thanks,
Claudine
