[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Though the females of most blue butterflies are duller or brown, here is an example where the female is arguably more attractive. The male is plain blue without the attractive black markings.

The Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) is widely distributed in most of Sweden and Europe, though it is rarely plentiful in any one area.

It has two generations, one in the spring and one in summer. The female of the second gen. has a little more black. There are a wide variety of larval host food plants, holly being one of them and hence the English name.

I tried to get more DOF but didn't quite succeed by using f8.

This image was cropped by about 50% and taken at a distance of about 2 meters with the camera hand-held.
After size redustion the image was sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

Lovely close-up of this pretty blue butterfly. Amazing that for once the female is prettier than the male! Wonderful colors and sharp details. I love the composition and bg.

Hello Ivan,
in this spring, argiolus was rather common here, but I failed to take a picture. Not necessary ... because you did it. You selected just the right point of view to achieve good sharpness on the wing upperside, the legs and both antennae. You met just the original colour of the butterfly.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan,
oh ...these littkle feloows are so fast. However they occus daily in my garden I have never taken a proper picture of them. This may be because of my shortcomings ofcoarse.
Rather strong crop, but I still can see all details. A nice image.
Regards, Jacob

bonjour ivan
c'est vrai qu'avec plus de profondeur l'ailes gauches aurait surement été egalement au foyer, mais pour une photo prise a main levée le resultat est plutot satisfaisant.
bravo;

I had posted two picture of Holly Blue shot in India many months ago, so my interest in this species is rather very special, Ivan, mainly because someone had to lead me to its true ID as usual :-)!
It is good to see it with the wings partially open, and it is a pretty colourful female, as you rightly mention in your note.
The focus is not at its best in this image; nevertheless, it has immense educative value for me.
Best regards.

The DOF is still great even with f8.
The detail on the antenna is fascinating. Nice to see a lovely female - the guys get all the attention usually.

Hi Ivan

A lovely shot you have captured of this female Holy Blue. It was interesting to read about the female being the more beautiful of this species. I suppose it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but apart from humans, we don't often see this in nature.

I really like your composition and POV. Showing the full right wing while the left wing is slightly obscured gives an interesting dimension to the shot. The details are nice and sharp (especially on the right wing, head, and antennae) and the colours are great. The BG is remarkable and the contrasting evenly green colour does well to enhance the insect. The exposure was well managed ensuring perfect lighting on the subject.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Ivan.
I'm sorry, but yet I'll be back to this your last post.I know Polyommatus bellargus, but this kind I am yet haven't seen.
Your composition is beautiful with good POV on pretty half open wings hereof small beauty.DOF is shallow(S2 me gives deeper with f/8 :- ))) ),but details on head and right wing are very good.I like also amazing colors and very nice green blurry BG.Well done, thanks for sharing.
Best greetings Milos.

Hello Ivan,
Oh I love these blue butterlfies, I was at a conservatory and couldn't find one of them who would sit still long enough to photograph. Wonderful color and I really like the Dof..great shot. TFS

Hi Ivan.
Pictured scene and its beautifulness are amazing at high range. Bravo. Only it is a pity a bit that left wing is perpendicular to monitor. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.
