Etna was known in Roman times as Aetna, a name thought to have derived either from the Greek word aitho ("to violently burn") or the Phoenician word attano. The Arabs called the mountain Gibel (or Jebel) Utlamat ("the mountain of fire"); this name was later corrupted into Mons Gibel (literally 'Mountain Mountain') and subsequently Etna's current local name Mongibeddu. The Greek word "Etna" means "I burn".

Volcanic activity at Etna began about half a million years ago, with eruptions occurring beneath the sea off the then coastline of Sicily. 300,000 years ago, volcanism began occurring to the southwest of the present-day summit, before activity moved towards the present centre 170,000 years ago. Eruptions at this time built up the first major volcanic edifice, forming a strato-volcano in alternating explosive and effusive eruptions. The growth of the mountain was occasionally interrupted by major eruptions leading to the collapse of the summit to form calderas

The evening before I flew to Sicily, it was erupting from this cone at the summit. However, by the time I visited the summit, activity had stopped. The deposits of sulphur can be seen near the top and the lava flow trailing off to the right.

So that's where you were last week, James! I was wondering about your absence.
The world news on TV covered the eruption of Etna and it feels wonderful to see your coverage of it through this picture.
The mountain looks quite pacified at the time of your taking this picture. Nevertheless, it is a great experience to look at this famed and still active volcano from such close proximity.

This is funny, James. I am a crossword puzzle addict and it seems that dear old Mt. Etna turns up in them all the time. However I have not ever seen Mt. Etna. So thank you! What do you mean, "by the time I visited the summit.." How close to the summit does one get to an erupting volcano? I'm sorry you didn't get to see more action but maybe it is just as well!. Thanks for sharing a nice shot of a current event.

A well composed shot of Mt Etna.Very good detail, the sulphur is very visible.Excellent lighting and very good colour saturation.The lion roars again.TFS

Hi James

Another stunning shot from you, my friend ans also a little look in the history and mythology books! A great note ;)
Even if you timing there wasn't perfect (you couldn't really do anything about it...), the timing of your shot is excellent. The gases erupting there are clearly visible, as well as that small lava flow on the right :) A lovely catch!
