[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My friend and I visited the Victor Harbor on the weekend. The weather was perfect. One of my aims for the day was to capture a good image of a Pelican, I think I achieved it. We were lucky that the Pelican's were just enjoying the sunshine close to the shore.

Pelican:

Description
There are seven species of pelicans in the world, all of which are similar in shape and, with one exception, are primarily white in colour. Males are larger than females. The most characteristic feature of pelicans is the elongated bill with its massive throat pouch. The bill is 40-50cm long and is larger in males than females.

Pelicans weigh 4.0-6.8kg, are 1.6-1.8m long. Pelicans have large wings and a wingspan of 2.3-2.5 m. They have an extremely light skeleton, weighing less than 10% of their total body weight.

Distribution
The Australian Pelican Pelecanus conspicillatus is found throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea and western Indonesia, with occasional reports in New Zealand and various western Pacific islands. In Australia it is widespread on freshwater, estuarine and marine wetlands and waterways including lakes, swamps, rivers, coastal islands and shores.

Diet
Pelicans mainly eat fish, but they are opportunistic feeders and eat a variety of aquatic animals including crustaceans, tadpoles and turtles. They readily accept 'handouts' from humans, and a number of unusual items have been recorded in their diet. During periods of starvation, pelicans have been reported capturing and eating seagulls and ducklings. The gulls are held under water and drowned before being eaten headfirst. Pelicans will also rob other birds of their prey.

Very pretty shot Debbie.
I think the lightning is good, composition interesting. This is really very good balanced shot. Well done. tfs. Stev

HI Debbie,
Excellent shot on this pelican!
I like so much the good illumination here, that produces great details.
Very good that soft pink on the beak and clear feathers that makes a great contrast with the dark ones at the tail.
I found very appropiated the DOF and the nicely blurred background got.
I had a picture on my gallery of a brown pelican, the most common one here in Venezuela.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Yes, you got a very good shot of a pelican. It is a classic pose in a classic composition. Exposure, sharpness and natural color are all excellent.

Hi Debbie

This is simply an outstanding shot! The composition here is reallt terrific and together with the pose of the pelican makes it all look so aestetic!
The details on the subject are exceptional and the correct management of the exposure made sure you'll have the right, well saturated colors eveywhere.
The POV is also excellent and the DOF is impressive, keeping great focus on the subject but also leaving a good impression for the BG.
All-in-all: brilliant work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Debbie,
you sure did get a very nice capture of a pelican so well done for that.It is interesting that the bill on this bird is pink in colour and offhand I don't recall seeing that colour before on any birds that I have seen. You have good focus, colour and point of view with this photo and thank you for putting it up.We have pelicans here in Alberta and as of yet I have not got any photos of them.Tfs Bob

Hola Debbie,
Preciosa imagen, de bella composición, con luz y nitidez excelentes. Saludos
José Ramón

Wonderful capture, Debbie. I love the lighting, details, and especially the "expression" on his face. I am not sure about the birds in the bg, though -- they tend to draw my eye away from the subject. I did a workshop to see if you agree.
Mike

Bonjour,
Belle posture pour ce beau pélican.
Bonne journée.

Hi Debbie,
Wonderful shot for this pelican. Focus very nice. composition interesting. Lightning very well.
Well done
Ahmet

Hi Debbie, this is a great shot of this Pelican. His pose is great; by looking down the way he is his head feathers are standing on end. The colour is great, the detail is great, and the depth of field you've selected works very well. I like how you can just barely pick out the two birds behind looking on. Very nicely seen and captured.

Thanks, John
