Some interesting granite formations in Joshua Tree Nat'l Park. What was a rather weak colour image made for a better BW conversion.

Should anyone be curious as to what I did for the BW conversion, it went like this:

I processed the same image twice; one for the highlights and then one for shadows. These two images were merged with photomatix using the "highlights and shadows" merging feature.

This combined image was then loaded into Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and converted to greyscale.
Then I adjusted it with:
-contrast +45
greyscale mix:
-red +11
-orange +91
-yellow -41
-green +25
-aqua -84
-blue -79
-purple +58
-magenta +51
sharpened

Then loaded this bad boy up into Corel Paintshop Pro X and applied the "clarify" command at an 8 pixel radius. This bumps the contrast even further and applies more sharpening.

Hallucinante photo,j'aime bien l'effet de la distorsion de l'image et les nuage de ciel bien éclairé.
Merci!

Hi Tim,
Fantastic compo...
My nit is the contrast...it is a bit to grey IMO; so more black and white wanted:-)

Annick

Why can't I do that with my 14-45? ha ha
You have the most amazing way of viewing the world. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
The B&W is fantastic because it brings out the intricacies of the stones.

Tim,

this is really great.

The B&W conversion works really well.
Great composition.

Gary

THIS should have been the cover of U2's most famous album, named or course Joshua Tree; an album (CD-showing my age) that helped me through some tough times....This is one of those places only a few can appreciate.

It looks like you are somewhat familiar with some Ansel Adams techniques you will have to share with me.

Wonderful textures, Tim. Good job on the B&W. Overall, just anice contribution. I'm not sure what the reality was, but this seems tilted just a bit to the left (I think I'm mostly basing this on the horizon, though the rock seem to have a bit of a lean, too).

Amazing work with Photoshop...The textures give an almost 3-D effect...I enjoy your work...TFS

I agree Tim. And the granites texture is well seen in B&W. Along with these sprawling cumulus clouds, the weathered granite formations make an excellent photo, Great work :)
