Better known backyard creatures:
The well known (and often presented but not by me) Bee beetle (Coleoptera; Scarabaeidae; Trichius fasciatus, Gebänderter Pinselkäfer; la Trichie fasciée) shows up on Knautia arvensis where it feeds on pollen. It's 11 mm in size. As you can see its hairy thorax is full of pollen; indeed, beetles are important pollinators in nature. The larvae of this species live a wholly different life in rotten wood.

Bee beetle is the name given to several beetle species of the Scarabaeidae family, in Europe mainly T. fasciatus, T. sexualis, but also the similar T. zonatus (=T. rosaceus), or T. abdominalis. You find distribution maps of European taxa on www.faunaeur.org.


It's a macro shot on monopod with the macro dual flash, one of the flashes on an extended arm to provide dispersed counter light. 1/125 sec, f 22. RAW. Enjoy!

Hi Dietrich,
Wonderful shot of this bee beetle. Lovely soft colours and sharpness. Excellent use of flash and a nice POV. I like the way the pollens are strewn all over its body. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

What a nice and technically perfect shot of this beautiful flower and bug on it. Great use of macro flash. Amazing exposure parameters and excellent reproduction of this exciting subject. Bravo and TFS. Superb done.

Hallo Dieter,
Farblich feines Bild dieses Pinselkäfers auf einer Knautia. Von der Schärfe her ist dieses Bild perfekt (nicht wie meins). Meistens stecken diese Käfer den Kopf in die Blüte, so ging es mir jedesmal auch mit diesen Käfern. War immer nur kurz in Bürchen. Kommst du mal mit? Jetzt wird es richtig interessant.
