African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer)

I took the picture of this old “daghaboy” a couple of minutes before my Swainson's Francolin in the Kruger National Park north of Lower Sabie. The colloquial South African name for mud is “dagha” and as they like to roll in it, they got the name “daghaboy”. It is said that the most dangerous buffalo are the old lone bulls or the ones in small groups. This was an old lone bull, as you can clearly see by how worn the horns are. You can also see that his back is covered in dried “dagha”. He was in a foul mood, as they usually are. When we stopped next to him, he started stamping his front hoofs, and tossing his head, looking at us as you can see.

I found an excellent source for ungulates on the internet, The Ultimate Ungulate which I believe to be the best site for ungulates on the internet.

Great sharpness and wondeful details in this lovely wildlife image Jan Hendrik.
It seems that the Buffalo keeps you in sight looking at the way his eye is turned towards the viewer.
Pity there are so many grassess in front of the lower part of his head. Best regards, Harry

Hi Jan Hendrick,
I thinmk he got his eyes on you ;-).
Great shot of the Waterbuffulo, quite a size difference to the birds you usually show.
No difference in quality mind you this is equally as well composed as tour bird pictures.
Great POV, sharpness and lighting are very nice.

Hi Jan,
Great note describing this characters behaviour..You can see that attitude clearly in its eye. Perhaps his age has made em' extra dangerous..
Us old farts..Well we tend to get a bit edgy at times ;)
Thanx for the links, nicely done.

Hi Jan, excellent shot of this guy in his natural element. This is one I don't think you'd care to get too close to. This almost looks like the look before the charge. Very nice capture of that eye.

Thanks, John

Hi Jan,
Truly a wonderful image.
Razorsharp. Well composed.
I don't care about the grasses in the foreground, on the contrary...

The pose of your subject here is terrific and the details you present him with are awesome!
Also, the close-up level is impressive, the DOF is exceptional and the natural colors are charming.
