English: White-headed Vulture
Latin: Trigonoceps (Aegypius) occipitalis
Dutch: Witkopgier
Range
The White-headed Vulture is found in the drier parts of Africa from Senegal in the west to Sudan and Eritrea in the north, and south to the Orange River. It does not uccur in Arabia.
Its main habitat is desert, open plains and thornbush.

Diet
The White Headed Vulture feeds almost exclusively on carrion.
It has, however, been known to kill flamingos in breeding colonies, and probably also kills lizards and some small mammals.

Voice
This is usually a silent vulture, but can emit a shrill chittering at a carcase.

Status and behaviour in the wild
White Headed Vultures are normally solitary birds, and even at a carcase it's rare to see more than a handful.
Food is located by these vultures going on the soar, which they do for much of the day before landing to sit in a tree or on the ground, if their search has not been successful.
While they are often seen at the kills of large predators, they also visit the kills of smaller animals.
It has been suggested that these vultures will kill young and small antelopes themselves, although no-one has actually seen it happen!
They drink regularly, and ten may be seen together at a waterhole. At night they tend to roost alone or in pairs.
One egg is laid in a nest on top of an acacia tree. The female incubates for at least 43 days before hatching.

Hi Peter,

Cute title. The Vulture isn't very cute though. Wonderful capture of him. The colors and details are excellent. I love the rosy pink on his face. Nice natural setting. What is that in his mouth??

Hallo Peter,

Groeten,
John.

Hello Peter,
Ofcorse, happy for the vulture, but definitely not for the prey. :)
