[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a female mule deer, spotted by my wife while we were driving along a country road. Look for big ears, a white rump, with a black tip to a small, narrow, white tail.

White tail deer also live here, and ironically the white-tails have a tan colored tail on the dorsal side, with no black tip, no white rump. However the large tail of the white tail deer is all white on the UNDERSIDE, which they actively flag at you when escaping. I suspect the white tail deer evolved to do that as a protective mechanism, luring predators away from hiding fawns.

There are differences in horns between the two species as well. But, as in this case, that feature is often not useful in the field.

Mule deer occasionally have a peculiar 'stotting' stride when escaping, which is a 4 legged, synchronous spring from their toes. It is said that stotting is an evasive mechanism which allows them to change direction quickly without warning. I have also heard that stotting is a demonstration to predators, showing them that pursuit will not be worth the energy.

Very nice image of this cute deer, I like your POV, colours and light. Wires gives a special touch to the image, despite they´re not "natural"

Beautiful lighting on a nice subject, sharp focus and good exposure. Dave the Burrowing Owls are not back at Tilley, but if I here of some I will get in contact with you, sorry sir.

long time no see but I'm happy you have posted this deer.Yours is the first posting where I have seen the location map actually used and that is something else indeed,I might just be doing the same myself.Your doe looks good with the soft light and muted colours,the only minus is the fence but you get your shots when and where you can.Welcome back Dave,I hope to see some more of what you have seen.Tfs. Hi Dave, a very nice shot of this lovely deer. The light is wonderful and soft. Great pov with the deer looking at you with those big eyes. Very well focused and nice and sharp. Great work.

Nicely captured, Dave. I like the tight composition. I also like the DoF and the way the plane of focus is clear here.
