Lucanus cervus male

Photographed close to the source of Buèges

The Lucanus or Kite (Lucanus cervus) concerns Lucanidés, very great family on a world level, but which in France counts less than one ten species. It is largest and most imposing of the European insects. It is also largest of our Coleopters, and the most impressive so much development mandibulaire of the males can reach spectacular proportions, which adds to the resemblance to the wood of cervidé.

Joel

Good first crack of the whip. I am always fascinated by these critters, their sheer strength compared to body size always freaks me out. Well played all round.

Hello Joel,
Welcome to TrekEarth! What a great opening shot! This is a fine macro, sharp and detailed. I like the way the light is catching his armour-plated back making it look like polished leather. Good composition.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Joel
Welcome to TN.
Hope you will upload more of these wonderful images in the near future.
Beautiful sharp and clear image of this giant with very nice details.
I've seen them fight in a film once with there big scissors hooked in to eachother and lifting there opponent.
Great to view such thing.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Joel.
I am glad to see the nice shot of the same beetle. Amazing details and sharpness of the image and perfect colour reproduction. Very interesting POV and great DOF. Diagonal composition of the shot is very impressive too. My compliments and best wishes.
Alexei.

Bonjour,
Je ne voudrais pas tomber dans de l'antiféminisme primaire mais Monsieur est particulièrement spectaculaire ! (:¦
Bonne journée.
