[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We had an afternoon in the Waitakers Ranges, Auckland on a small train where we saw close-up all the wonderful native trees, and ferns and plants in the Rain Forest there. And yes, it was very wet, cold and windy, but I managed to get some photos of the area.

I like this picture – as you can see it was very overcast with many showers and winds passing over. It shows some of the tall Tree Ferns growing in the bush.

I haven’t touched up this photo at all – no PP work or sharpening. I like the BW look of it.

I will put a WS showing the same scene with Shadows and Highlights added – which one do you prefer?

The Rain Forest Express

Just 40 minutes from central Auckland, you can embark on a wilderness adventure aboard Watercare's Rain Forest Express, a narrow-gauge railway located deep in the heart of the Waitakere Ranges. You will be taken over wooden bridges that span valleys lined with ancient forest, and pass through tunnels lit at night with a multitude of Glowworms and housing the odd Cave Weta!. Your adventure culminates in a visit to one of Auckland's hidden treasures, the Upper Nihotupu Dam, where the silence of the bush belies the closeness of the city.

During the journey your train driver will tell the story of the Rain Forest Express from its role in building the dams which now help to sustain Auckland, through to its use today.

After visiting the dam, take a stroll to Seaver's Camp, overlooking the Nihotupu Valley and Manukau Harbour.

The train will collect you from the Camp and after a leisurely ride back to the Depot, you are free to return to the hustle and bustle of the city.

It was a family outing and there were 13 of us - and we all enjoyed our time there immensely. . .

Hi Janice,
A lovely silhouette of the forest.
I liked looking at the workshop image to see the colours in the tree trunks etc but I like this version better I think. The enhanced version with colour is just a touch noisy and doesn't have the same impact as this one.
It reminds me of one of my first shots on TN which captured a similar mood.

Very simple composition but I like it a lot! A little dramatic, a little artistic and even if not very colourful - who cares! :>
The only thing which I would like to change is to "delete" a tree in the right corner - just to better expose the palms :)
Anyway, very nie presentation with very interesting note :)

First of all. I find the B&W version very nice. Yust what LordPotty says: A lovely silhouette of the forest. I prefer the original version. It's sharper. You can see more details. Regards and TFS.

Hello Janice,
Fine atmosphere in this fern forest shot and I like the original best: the accentuation of the colours in the treated version is neither here nor there in my opinion and it loses some of its magic. And yet I wouldn't have it black and white. the slight hint of colour being a part of the atmosphere.
