Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris)
Sea Otters occasionally do spend time on the beach, even if it is fairly unusual to see them anywhere else but in the water.
This day, I arrived at the beach and had just set up my tripod with a rented 400 f/2.8 lens when this female decided to make my day and come ashore for a photo shoot. She kept eye contact with me in the beginning while posing for my camera, and then settled down and fell asleep on the beach.
Many sea otters that come ashore do this because they are sick or wounded. (I have seen one other sea otter sleeping on the beach, and another one sitting on a rock just by the beach, sound asleep but still halfway in the water.)
I think this one came ashore to get an undisturbed nap and to get away from the males. She slept for almost an hour, occasionally waking up and looking at me before falling back to sleep.
In this area, the sea otters basically own the place. Most people respect them and leave them alone and keep their distance. |

Hello Tage,
Well composed. Excellent sharpness and details. Excellent pose.
Very good detail in the blacks.

nice photo. good focus nice colors. i'm surprised that the animal come onto the beach. further south the only time i've seen them on land is on rocks that were seperated from the land by water. even then they get skitish when i come within 30 yards. nice POV.
