Hyla arborea - common tree frog

Size: both sexes have about 5 cm in length.

Habitat: lives wherever it finds water and trees, bushes or thatch, climbing up to 1000 m altitude.

Behaviour: it is the only tree frog in Europe. Due to its homocromy does not try to escape when discovered. Forages in late evening and during the night, but sometimes also hunts insects by day when sunbathing on tree foliage. Calls loudly during night in the mating season.

Food habits: eats many invertebrates, mainly flying species. The stomach contents examined revealed coleopterans, dipterans, arachnids and mites.

Reproduction: eggs are laid in the deeper waters of clear puddles with aquatic vegetation. This is the only period in active life when they leave the trees and shrubs. Tadpoles are olive in color and swim actively in all directions like fish, and unlike other frog larvae, which mainly stay on the bottom of the water. Their length span is 34-44 mm and the metamorphosis lasts about 90 days.

Enemies: raptors and snakes. It is somewhat protected by its homocromy, being very hard to spot by predators.

Conservation: the species is vulnerable, and it's STRICTLY PROTECTED; it is sensitive to pollution and drought. Necessitates local protection measures.

What a cutie!!! He is a really an interesting guy! I had tree frogs in my garden. Tiny green frogs with huge voices, sounded like 10 lb. frogs........
