Genus: Argynnis
Species: adippe
Subspecies: adippe

Wingspan: 55 - 69mm

High Brown Fritillary (Argynnis adippe adippe)
/Perleťovec prostřední/

Resident
Range declining.
This large, powerful butterfly is usually seen flying swiftly over the tops of bracken or low vegetation in woodland clearings. In flight, the males are almost impossible to separate from those of the Dark Green Fritillary, which often share the same habitats. However, both species frequently visit flowers such as thistles and Bramble where it is possible to see their distinctive underside wing markings.

European/world range
Occurs widely through Europe and across temperate Asia to Japan. Although locally abundant in Europe, it has declined in at least eight countries. In CR be ranked among endangered species.

Foodplants
Common Dog-violet (Viola riviniana) is used in all habitats, but Hairy Violet (V. hirta) is also used in limestone areas. It may occasionally use Heath Dog-violet (V. canina) and Pale Dog-violet (V. lactea) .

Habitat
Two main habitats are used: bracken-dominated habitats or grass/bracken mosaics, and limestone rock outcrops, usually where scrub or woodland has recently been cleared or coppiced. Formerly the butterfly occurred in woodland clearings, probably where bracken was also present.

Hi Milos,
Wonderful presentation of the male and female High Brown Fritillaries. Looks very beautiful and the difference in colour is quite evident. Lovely colours and sharp details with fine focus and lighting. Excellent POVs and the diagonal compositions looks fabulous. Kudos.

bonjour milos
ma preferance va vers la femelle, bien que sa couleur soit moins vive que le male,je prefere sa presentation sur la fleur qui la place devant un BG plus agreable.le male est bien sur tres beau aussi mais moins mis en valeur a mon gout.

Hello Milos,
Two brilliant shots in one. I think it's a very nice idea to present the two together!
After all, the Fritillaries are very hard to identify and it is very useful to see the difference between the male and female side by side. Excewllent sharpness and fine natural colours. Both are very well composed too.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla
