[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this image of this fungi in the Mt Crawford Forest near Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills. I had to stretch out on the ground to get this one (not so easy to get up at either). The fungi looked so interesting and perfect, I couldn't resist. I am pretty certain they are Gymnopilus but not to sure whether I have the correct one of this species. This one has been recorded in that area.

Gymnopilus pampeanus

Gymnopilus pampeanus (Gymnos [Gr.] -naked; pilos [Gr.] - cap; possibly from pampineus [L.] consisting of tendrils.) Forms spectacular golden-brown clumps at the bases of tree stumps. The clumps are like small bread rolls at first, expanding to almost dinner-plate size.

Common Name:

• Pileus/cap
6.5-15cm diameter. Golden, tawny brown. Fibrillose with small, scaly patches. Convex becoming flattened. Margin inturned, often irregular when old. Flesh: thick, light tan.
• Lamellae/gills
Yellow becoming brown. Adnate to sinuate. Crowded. Thin.
• Stipe/stem
4-11cm. Same colour as pileus. Stout, often curved and swollen at base. Fibrillose, striate, somewhat scaly below the fibres left by cortina..
• Ring
Cortina high on the stem. With age, this becomes a few fibres dusted with rusty spores.
• Spores
Spore print rusty brown.
• Habitat
Densely caespitose (growing in dense clumps) at the bases of pine and Eucalyptus stumps, Also on a range of other trees.
