"The BLUE-WINGED PARROTLET". = Forpus xanthoptergius. Also known as Forpus crassirostris.

This is a BIG PARROT in a tiny, tiny body of slightly smaller than 12 cm. in length. It is a DWARF PARROT. It is not a budgie.

This species has become increasingly popular to watch in zoos and aviaries because of its diminutive size, charming behavior, and bright, colourful plumage. It is often called the "Blue-winged Lovebird of South America". The parrotlet does resemble the well known Lovebird ( Agapornis, Selby) native to Africa and Malagasy Republic, but is not a close relative. It is, in reality, a TINY VERSION of the much larger Amazon Parrot.

And, this one you are seeing is from Peru, S.A.

Their diet consists of fruit, grass seeds and other grains. They do consume, at times, small beetles, mealworms and ant pupae.

Though they can imitate human speech quite well and are very attractive to look at it is not that easy to raise them as 'pets'.

It is easy to see them in the wild, specially in the late evening hours, because they tend to "roost" in the same area every night. This great quality of theirs has also become their "downfall". The South American bird smugglers, knowing this fact, snare them at night and sell them to the pet industry.

Nine years ago we saw large bands of them in Northeastern Peru and Eastward to Western Brazil. We had registered, then, the Sierra Parakeet ( Bolborhynchus ayamara); and the Tui Parakeet ( Brotogeris sanctithomae) Both these species are EXCELLENT mimicers of human speech too.

However, the Mexican Forpus is a larger species and does not mimic human speech that easily.

For details please check out: this species here.

Hi Aires,
This is certainly a beautiful bird specie to look at.
Your idea to present both sides of the bird's head is very good.
Do you took both pics with flash?
We can appreciate very different effects on each picture.
Very interesting the info in your notes.
My best regards,
JM

How cool is that Mario. Flat roof with bird. Great double paned photo.

Hello Mario !
Nice picture of a beautiful bird ! I love his vivid green color a lot. I like the composition, with two different view on his head (a pity that the left picture is a bit out of focus). I like the colors too, nice to see the difference with flash and without flash. Well done !
Valerie.

Namastay Mario,
