Well that 2nd anniversary has turned up... so here I am 2 years on, how things have changed. I'm not able to get out to post a 'here's a photo I took today picture' because the weather is foul, my health is poor and the reserve I live on is still closed because of the foot and mouth outbreak. I live in one of the 3km exclusion zones.

So holiday pictures it is. This is my first upload from the Orkney Islands... It is also only the 3rd picture for the Orkney's and the first landscape from there.

BUT, I might have to describe this landscape shot to you... I needed something to make that setting sun look great.

So working down we have the open sky,

then the setting sun is peeping between a gap in the layers of the cloud at the back... Being out of focus, the sun is larger than the whole and the blurred clouds have filled in this whole...

Down another layer to the silvery layer, well this is water, specifically Loch of Harray.

Down to the darker bottom we have the foreground vegetation from which this seed head was isolated.

The seed head is from the wild angelica (Angelica archangelica) which is found throughout the Orkney Islands.

The area is stunning and well worth a visit, but insect life is high in this salt marsh and when I say high, I mean very high. To drive through it one evening I had to use my windscreen wipers constantly just to see through the car windscreen. It was worse than torrential rain when you can't see anything... and it went on for 8kn like this. If you had opened a car window you would have been eaten alive.

A few nights later, we went back (don't ask why) and luckily there were not as many biters that night. It was one of those nights where we wanted to revisit a certain area because it was the last night on the island before we had to head home and we had decided to enjoy it to the last ray of sunshine.

It was a really great place to visit and well worth it, but if you do go there, even 2 weeks will not be long enough to get everything in...

The picture is almost full frame, taken in RAW, underexposed by -1.333EV, converted to jpeg with no adjustments and resized for TN. It was taken at F/5.6 to get the fastest possible shutter speed whilst keeping ISO 100 because there was a breeze and the seed head did not want to stop moving around. I was also against time, so no tripod. We had just arrived at where we were going to and within a few moments, the sun popped out of the gap in the clouds and then was gone again inside a minute or two... I literally snatched a few shots off and it was all over.

Enjoy.

Dear Emma

I do not know you, but felt in my heart to encourage, and wish you all the best with your ill health. I am sure many Trek Nature members will have the same thoughts.

You ended your very interesting note with Enjoy. Thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed the story that accompanied your 2nd Birthday posting.

I am a sucker for a good story, and has told many people when I start looking at photos to critique and I see effort is done with the preparation of the notes, I immediately award the smiley no matter how good or bad the photo is.

Congratulations on being on Trek Nature for 2 years, and the photo you have chosen deserves a round of applause. This is a picture filled with warmth and magnetism. It is a striking capture of nature, which you managed to snap just at the right moment.

Thank you for sharing and all my good wishes for the future.

Hi Emma,
Sorry to hear that your health isn't going well. I really hope that you will get better soon. I can understand how frustrating it must be for you to not be able to go out into nature.

Ofcourse I need to congratulate you with your 2nd year on TN. I am very glad to have seen so many wonderful photos from you and to actually meet you in your playground as well. You learning cruve is clearly visable thoughout your gallery. But more important, my learning curve has partially been formed by you.

This is truly a wonderful and surprising photo where the mood of the colors and strong simple composition makes for a very pleasant view. The different layers of colors going from light to dark are very well seen. The details in the angelica are perfectly captured. The slight blurr of the wind is actually a pleasant one as well.
TFS,
Niek
