Male Chaffinch (Fringilla coelabs)

Reference: Chaffinch

Introduced from Europe and now abundant throughout New Zealand in both native and exotic forest, scrub, farmland, tussockland, parks and gardens.
An attractive finch with conspicuous white shoulder, wingbar and outer tail feathers. The adult male has a black forehead, blue-grey crown and nape, a rich pinkish-brown face and underparts fading to white on the belly and a reddish brown back and olive rump. The female is soft brownish grey, with a greenish rump and prominent white wingbars on a darker wing.
Chaffinch feed mainly on the ground and eat a mix of seeds (cereals and brassicas, weeds and pine), invertebrates such as spiders, caterpillars, moths, flies and aphids, and small fruits of native trees and shrubs.
Breeding is between September and late January. A neat well camouflaged nest of grasses and lichens lined with hair, feathers and wool is built in a tree fork. A clutch of 3 – 6 greyish blue eggs with purplish blotches is incubated by the female for 11 – 15 days. The eggs hatch over 1 – 3 days and are brooded by the female. After the fledgling period of 10 – 16 days they continue to be fed by both parents for c. 3 weeks.

Hi Kathleen,
A lovely capture!
I like so much the POV and all the clear/sharp details got on the bird.
The colours and patterns on the plumage looks so beautiful, in this good pose.
The slight red on the bud under the birds adds some colour accent to the image.
Well done and thanks fr share it.
My best regards,
JM

It is most interesting to learn of the many species introduced from Europe, as opposed those things which are native and sometimes exclusively so. This line of introduction to a new country from Europe is an area I would like to explore more. Very nicely pictured Kathleen.

Hello Kathleen
This is a great natural composition..I struggle to capture the male chaffinch even though he visits my garden daily..the colours are spot on and pin sharp.
Best Regards and TFS
Paul

Hallo Kathleen,
Een zeer mooie scherpe opname, prachtig van kleur!t.f.s.

This is a excellent, sharp image Kathleen. The colors are very natural, the exposure right on and the placement of the subject is perfect. I think your copyright might have worked better on the other corner. Where it is conflicts with your subject.
