Family IGUANIDAE
Common Name/s GALAPAGOS LAND IGUANA (E)
IGUANE TERRESTRE DES GALAPAGOS (F)
IGUANA TERRESTRE DE LAS GALÁPAGOS (S)
Species Authority (Gray, 1831)

There are two species of land iguana in the Galapagos: C. Subcristatus is the more widespread while C. Pallidus is found only on Santa Fé.

They number between 5000 and 10000 individuals, and measure up to 1 m in length and 13 kg in weight.

They live in small colonies, in marked contrast to when Darwin visited the islands in 1835 and had trouble pitching his tent owing to the number of iguana burrows!

Evidence from the Seymour population indicates that the normal lifespan is over 60 years. The reduction in population is most probably the result of predation by man and introduced animals such as dogs, pigs, cats and rats. Land iguanas vary in color but are generally a pale to dark yellow, occasionally coming close to ochre.

Adult land iguanas feed mainly on pads and fruit from the Opuntia cactus, but they also eat other plants and insects. Young iguanas, in contrast feed mainly on insects and other arthropods, and become largely vegetarian as they mature.

Hello Selen,
Galapagos really harbours some amazing species like this Iguana, you're very lucky to have seen them. Great capture of this one hiding in the grass. Great focus on the head with sharp details and fine colours. Very well composed too.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hello Selen,
Reading your intro, I believe I belong to the same subspecies and thus it might be possible to communicate; for example to mention a few words about your image.
I do believe the fellow depicted is definitely another species.
Well done
Annick

Hi Selen. He looks a big beast.I like the pose with its head turned around to have a look at you.good natural colours and detail. well done never seen one so thanks for posting. good notes too.

Nick..

For being so well camouflaged, you captured this reptile in good clarity.
This is a difficult surrounding to take a photo in, but you have it right on.
I like the head turned this way, as it makes a nice pose.
TFS, and good week to you.

Hi Selen

Greetings from Singapore.

The head is a great focus in this shot - the detail and pose are good. The shot as a whole demonstrates the habitat well and the way the iguana blends in.

Hi Selen,
Splendid shot of this huge monster in its natural environment. The lighting, focus, sharpness are all very impressive and I like the pose you have captured. Still, I would like to see any other POVs of this Iguana, maybe a closeup too. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.
