Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep
Scene
Waterton Canyon SW of downtown Denver, Colorado. During the winter months the Big Horn Sheep migrate to lower altitudes to areas where more abundant grass can be found. I walked back into the canyon about 2kms early one December morning just as the sun was rising. As it became light the sheep began moving down off of the steep slopes to the Platte River.
Background
Waterton Canyon is a Forest Service protected area where no bicycles, no dogs, and no hunting are allowed. There is a service road along the Platte River for the powerlines, aqueduct, and dams so walking the canyon is very gentle and easy. The Big Horns are acclimatized to the humans so walking among them was no problem. But, the best bet is to wait for them to pass or walk very carefully around the herd. Stay away from the lambs and ewes for safety sake. |

You did a wonderful job on this shot .. Love the way the rams face is framed by the brush and your timing with the grass in it's mouth is just super ..
I have the older 300mm f/4 lens and I have been thinking of getting the newer af/s D lens that you used but have heard that the focusing is not as fast as other af/s lenses..
I like my older lens but if the newer one is worth it I might get it...
