These raptors are called White-tailed Kites in the U.S. I was outside this evening taking photos of some California Quails when I spotted the kites doing what appears to be some aerobatic manuevers. I quickly aimed at the kites as not to miss the action. Much to my surprise, one of the kites had caught a rodent and was passing it to the other in mid air! I have only seen this one other time and did not have a camera with me. I rushed to take the photos and didn't have time to change the camera settings so iso was left at 1000. Also these birds were quite a distance away, about one eigth to one quarter mile(200-400 meters), thus the noisy photo. Heavy cropping and noise reduction to put photo together. Thanks for looking.
From Wikipedia:
The White-tailed Kite was rendered almost extinct in the 1930s and 1940s by shooting and egg-collecting, but they are now again common in California. Their distribution is sporadic, however; they can be seen in the Central Valley and southern coastal areas, and also around the San Francisco Bay. They are also found in southern Texas, on the Baja California peninsula, and in eastern Mexico.
White-tailed Kites feed principally on rodents, and they are readily seen patrolling or hovering over lowland scrub or grassland. Their coloration is gull-like, but their shape and flight falcon-like, with a rounded tail. Mainly white underneath, they have black wingtips and shoulders. Outside the breeding season they roost communally in groups of up to 100. |

Hello Wing,
a fantastic report on the food exchange of these raptors. Nice and soft evening light. Despite the heave crop and noise reduction the pictures seem pretty clear. Thanks for sharing this rarely phtographed moment.
Regards, Jacob
