Great Blue Heron
(Ardea herodias)

This bird is grey-blue with black stripes over the eyes and black streaks on its white foreneck; the bill is yellow. Ornate plumage on the head, neck and back decorate the breeding adult. Heights average 39-52 inches. A harsh squawk characterizes its call.
The Great Blue Heron resides along lakes, ponds, rivers and marshes from coastal Alaska, along south-central Canada to Mexico on the west coast.

This adaptable birds large size enables it to prey on a variety of animals including fish, mice, small birds and insects. This wide variety of feed enables the heron to stay farther north during the winter months (as long as there is open water) longer than other species. Most of these birds nest in large groups amongst tall trees or in reedbeds; 3-7 pale greenish-blue eggs on a shallow platform of sticks lined with a finer material characterize the nest. The young herons disperse in the late summer and can be found at small ponds, in mountain waters or wherever there is fish.

Good DOF and colors, nice shot. I think the fish in the mouth makes it more interesting.

Good shot! Your timing was impeccable, and your DOF is perfect too. I really like the droplets of water too! The only thing that I'm not so keen on is the amount of JPEG compression - you've compressed it very heavily which means there's a loss of sharpness and the droplets have artifacts around them, which distract from the image... Perfect timing, and a good note too :-D

Just look at the expression of its eye - Its got that "I GOT YOU!!!" look. This capture has wonderful DOF and color, but most of all its got excellent timing! One can almost see the Heron shaking the fish. Excellent post and note

Hello Houghton,
this is really a stunning shot. The gret blurred green backgrond allows the bird to be very outstandingly clear and sharp. the action is great, real jof of clamping the fish. the grass at the Fg makes the shot exciting.
Very excellent composition with fast action to grab the opportunity.
