Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes).

This was captured with the 400D awhile back. At 1/320th, the movement of the forewings is clearly shown.

There are some who say there are too many butterfly postings on TN..I tend to agree.

Like many at TN, I'm limited to what can be found here at home. So until I can make some trips to get some new material, I'm taking a bit of break from regular posting. I'll still visit to critique from time to time of course..

Much has been written here on TN about this species, so I'll just insert a few facts about Swallowtails as a WHOLE :)

The male swallow tail has yellowish wings.

The largest swallow tail is the Japanese giant swallow tail.

The spice bush adult uses odor to protect itself.

As a larva, the spice bush will mimic a snake.

As a larva, the tiger swallow tail eats wild cherry leaves.

The cotton wood larva eats tulip poplars.

The tiger Swallowtail caterpillar is dark green with two yellow eye spots.

Hi Howard,
A fine lovely picture. Nice warm light, beautiful colours and perfect focus. BG is well done.
Thanks for sharing,

Claude

There can't be too many shots of butterflies like this Howard ... rather them than more mallards ... or seagulls ;)
An excellent capture,beautifully composed.
Very nicely done.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Howard,
quite a dramatic image, love the swooping curves of this Swallow Tail. Impressed by what you've squeezed out of your 400D too..
Hope to see you back soon with 'new material' asap, take care.
Paul

Hi Howard,

Hello Howard,
Beautiful picture of a beautiful butterfly. I liked the way you have captured it with movements in the fore wings.Gives it a dramatic effect. Excellent focus and sharpness.Good lighting too.
I agree with you that there are hundreds of posts of butterflies in TN ,especially nowadays. But still, they are a marvel to behold and each composition is unique in its own way just as you have done with yours. So looking forward to more beautiful captures from you and thanking you for sharing this shot,
Smitha.

Hello dear Howard
Very intersting shot of this Giant Swallowtail,I always like to see butterfly
photos :o)
Perfect focusing,lighting and BG,Welldone.

Good Luck
Fartash

Hi Howard,
a very nice picture with fine details and nice clours.
The DOF is also good, the subject standsout well.
I know what you mean; when we have posting 500-600 pictures
it's hard the get any new material at home, I really hope Micke and I can find someting new with our new hide.
I hope you stop by now and then.
See you arond, my friend.

Hello Howard,
OK, there are a lot of butterfly postings on TN but not too many for me, I mean if we are going to have a flora and fauna balance on this site we may as well feature microscope shots of bacteria and show images of fleas and mites.
The truth is most of us like to show what we think is beautiful, like butterflies and this is a big beauty, nicely captured. As Swallowtails tend to vibrate their wings when taking nectar, I couldn't have made a better job with my 400, but your new Canon should remove that shake too with a high ISO possibilities.
Look forward to seeing the results of your ventures outside your domain.
TFS,
Ivan

Hello Howard,
Another wondeful capture of a Swallowtail from you in beautiful light and from a fine POV. I like its pose on the pretty flower and it looks great against the lovely dark background. Very well composed!
I don't think you can have too much of these beauties but they do attract a lot of attention because of their beauty and bright colours at the expense of other interesting shots which is a pity.
Enjoy your break, we all need that at times, I'm soon ready for one!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

As usual - beautiful! :) Your lighting is always perfect. I haven't taken to getting so low on my butterfly shots - we have some serious grassburs around here and I'm a wimp. ha ha
