Hello all,

This was taken a couple of weeks ago. It's a Red Deer fawn (Cervus elaphus). I was trying to shoot Stags in the early stages of their rut. I did get some but the results were not as pleasing as this shot which I thought the best of the session.

I shot into the sun in the early morning as mist was rising from the bracken and surrounding water. I think the layers from the bracken, the golden tones and the "lost" pose of the fawn make it quite pleasing.

Red Deer are one of the largest species of deer in the world and has a large distribution covering Europe, West Asia Minor and even into the Atlas mountains of Africa.

I hate to mention it but the meat, vension, is very tasty :-)

I don't use points anymore so feel free to comment, critique, leave points or don't leave points - it's completely up to you!

I hope you like it.

Hi Paul

Superb shot of the Red Deer Fawn, very nicely composed and I really like the layers of foliage, cute pose with the Fawn looking upwards, beautiful warm colours and lighting too.

Beautiful atmospheric shot, Paul. Great colors and layers. The deer profile is wonderful, but the shape of the leaves adds interest and complexity. On that first layer maybe a bit more DoF and including a bit more? Really lovely, though. ANd I agree, it's nice to see you back.

Hi Paul and Soooo nice to see you posting again!

This is indeed one that anyone could be very happy and proud with.
I really like the mood of this picture a lot as well as the warm tones given by the rising sun.
The fawn is in splendid focus and also in a great pose, while the composition you created with the ferns on the right is terrific.
The shallow DOF here is also superb and manages to isolate your subject very well but also create a nice 3D effect among the vogotation from the right side of the frame.
Overall: an outstanding job!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi PDP, good to see you.
The colours here are great, that early morning mist sure gives a wonderful glow to this scene. Well composed and detailed.
Venison - yes, I've tried it, but not too keen on it...
Cheers

Hi Paul.
I agree with every your word about art merits of your amazing shot. It is really artistic and executed with great skillfulness and taste. The principal key of esthetic "force" of your work are great composition and cropping, impressive silhouettes (shapes), so attractive scene at whole and, of course, pleasant colour palette and delicate tone passages. Excellent refined art picture. My compliments and best wishes.
Alexei.

Beautiful colours, Paul, and lovely silhouettes, very clean. Like the long aspect as well. I guess you must have been quite a distance away using 300mm and a converter.
p.s. Some of the titles and thumbnails on your LPW site don't match ;)

Hi Paul,
Great to see you post another wonderful photo on TN. Your photos always seem to have a very high mood quality. Like this one, the soft orange light, the different layers of fern and the precious pose of the fawn make all for a very impressive photo. Even with the hazy, you got such a high degree of details and clarity. Can't do anything else than to make this a fav of mine.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Paul,
an artful and atmospheric looking photo you have graced TN with. This is my favorite time of day for taking wild life shots as the sun still low on the horizon imparts a warmer and richer light to the subject and that makes the colour saturation better without photoshop manipulation. The colour and subject matter is really very eye pleasing ,Paul and I'm happy to have been able to have had the opportunity to see this gem of a photo. You shot into the sun and got an excellent photo and even if it were behind you this would still be an excellent shot.
