| It rains a lot in this island, so the nights are full with serenades for the song of the hundreds of toads that are plentiful in this time... this morning, I met with these two lovers, making their "things" under my car :-)... it's two specimen (I think so) of the Marine Toad (Bufo marinus), well, truly is terrestrial toad native to Central and South America. It is a member of the genus Bufo, which includes hundreds of different true toad species in different habitats throughout the world. The Marine Toad is a prolific breeder; females lay single-clump spawns with large numbers of eggs. Its reproductive success is partly because of opportunistic feeding: it has a diet, unusual among Anurans, of both dead and living matter. Adults average 10 to 15 centimetres (4–6 in) in length; the largest recorded specimen weighed 8.60 kg (18.9 lb) with a length of 20 cm (7.9 in), and a previously recorded specimen weighed 2.65 kg (5.8 lb) with a length of 38 cm (15 in) from snout to vent. The Marine Toad has poison glands, and the tadpoles are highly toxic to most animals if ingested. |
