These magpies are passerine birds of the crow family They do indeed as has been written, tend to gather around cattle and feed yards. You have seen them close up. As they are a part of the Crow Family, they are not as afraid of humans as many other species. We had plenty of them in the wilderness and we have plenty of them in the Palouse and rolling grass farmlands 100 miles S of our wilderness.

On the grasslands, insects, perhaps stirred up by the cattle, attract these Magpies as well as Cattle Egrets. Good fortune brought me out looking for fall shots when I spotted this bunch of Magpies hanging out as if they were having a field day in the real field. Fortunately for them, the added colored trees made a good picture. This is where they really live...and of course other places as well including aviaries, however this is the natural setting for this particular family. they nest in the trees and as fall comes closer their nests are much more visible. During the daytime they flit about as if they had a carefree life, which it appears that they do.

From the light of dawn, through the brilliance of the day, to the light of dusk, the waning moments of the long day and the descent of night are the inspiration of birds and artists, and perhaps a photographer such as me. Some times I would go into the mountains to watch the birds, water and wind and I heard musical tones. I felt as though I had a deep relationship with nature. It is a strange and wonderful feeling to hold something in your mind which is trying to detach you from daily life and you feel that you aren't good enough to follow.

Have you ever had a dream of flying? One in which you are in control and you can fly without coming down. I have. With remarkable lucidity I controlled my fate till waking. It was beyond imagination and a glimpse of what lies beyond...

Hi Bob,
Here in the UK, there is an very old rhyme about Magpies, and according to how many you see together gives a different prediction on what fate is in store for you:

One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret
Never to be told

Yes, I have had many, many dreams of flying and I always wake up from one with a smile on my face. The feeling of freedom, with nothing blocking your way is just amazing.
This is an excellent shot of these flying birds. (The birds look more like pigeons than Magpies!)
A really good contribution to your new theme.
I will try and post a shot to fit that criteria in the close future.
Thankyou for sharing this wonderful photo.
Well done,
Joe

If you see one, the trick is to salute it and enquire as to how his wife and family are. I'm sure there are many different local variations of this around the country, but it's strange how one particular animal can become such a portentious creature and entwined with superstition. Just thought i'd share that with you!

Anyway i digress. Good shot with some lovely colour in the trees and also a great depth due to the rolling hills in the background.

bonjour Bob

Saludos Luis52.

Hello Bob,
A pleasant seasonal capture, showing how nature is changing the dress!
The magpies are interesting additions, I feed a few myself and it is fun to observe their behaviour...
Earlier in the summer I noticed one completely without tail but it was still able to fly. However the other birds were always trying to chase the injured one from the food, and lately I haven't seen it anymore...
Greetings,
Pablo -
