Elk (Cervus elaphus)
Elk, or red deer, were once found throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, from Europe through northern Africa, Asia, and North America. Extensive hunting and habitat destruction have limited elk to a portion of their former range. Today large populations in North America are found only in the western United States from Canada through the Eastern Rockies to New Mexico, and in a small region of the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. Elk were reestablished in the eastern United States with three transplantations throughout the 1900's. Various elk populations in the western United States, including Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, contributed to the reestablishment. In Eurasia elk populations are now confined to protected areas and less populated regions. Their traditional range extended from 65o N in Norway to 33o N in Africa. Elk have been introduced into Ireland, Argentina, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand.

Was this taken at the elk reserve in Jackson? We were there in early October and the fall colors were beautiful. Then we got snowed out. You certainly got a nice close shot. Love the grass...

Hy Bryan,

I see were both posting Reds this week. I really like this portait shot, which is pin sharp and beautifully lit end exposed. I love the pov and the nice soft background really makes him stand out. A great shot.

Kind regards,

Mike
