A Rolling Drunk Bumble Bee

This fellow is rolling drunk. There was a wall of these climbing roses and the bumble bees were is ecstasy rolling around in the flowers. They were so funny to watch. It was hard to get a straight picture of them as they were just rolling and twisting and turning as they were are searching for nectar and pollen among the colourful stamens.

The bumble bee and her distant cousin the honey bee, are often confused.

Unlike the honey bee the humble bumble is gentle and slow. As she trundles around the garden collecting pollen and nectar she is quite different to her streamlined relative who dashes about everywhere.

Even her body shape is different. The bumble is round and furry and not at all like her more wasp shaped cousin the honey bee.

There are three kinds of bumble bee and all are seen at different times of year:
the large Queen,
the smaller imperfectly formed female worker bee
the tiny male or drone bee.

Only the Queen and the worker bees have a sting.

Hi Janice!

Haha, I like this fellow :-) Sunny day, lots of pollen, it is obvious he's drunk :-) Very nice picture with high quality. I like perfectly exposured petals, details, sunny light and colours.

Hi Janice,
Very nice macro. Perfect exposure. Sharp details.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Janice,
Lovely capture of this Bumble Bee swivelling around in the rose. I posted a very similar shot with a honey bee some time ago. It's real fun to watch their behaviour! Great sharpness and good exposure of the white petals. I can almost smell the rose!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Janice

I am sure it must have been a treat to watch this performance of the bumble bees. However, the evidence does suggest that it was not all just fun and games. Appart from the drunken or ecstatic behaviour the bees apparently were still hard at work. One can clearly see the pollen that this individual has already collected in its "pollen basket" (a hairy area high up on the hind leg).

I like the details on the shot – the snow white petals of the rose, the pollen bearing stamen, and the visitor too, show excellent sharpness. The composition is great with the angled flower (not photographed from right above) positioned somewhat on the diagonal line. Well saturated colours, good contrasts, and superb use of the midday sun light make this shot a pleasure to view.

Well done and TFS.
Kia Ora and God bless.
Loot

PS. Please say hi to Dave as well.

Hello Janice,

A beautiful close up from this flower with a bumble bee in the center. Splendid compo. Very, very sharp picture. You can even seen the pollen to the leg of the bumble bee. Wonderful colors. Interesting notes. I love these beautiful insects and a specialy the honey bee. I am crazy about honey (-: And just what Loot said: " The composition is great with the angled flower (not photographed from right above) positioned somewhat on the diagonal line" I'm fully agree with him. Regards and TFS BOB

Hi Janice,
such a cute and happy bumble bee, I love them! And beautiful flower photo. Here in southwest Sweden it is very grey, but I try to make it colourful indoors, with flowers, and tomorrow, Christmas tree.
