El nombre guepardo (guépard en francés, ghepardo en italiano y Gepard en alemán) proviene del latín medieval gattus pardus, con el significado de "gato leopardo".
Su hábitat actual son las llanuras y planicies de África y de algunos países orientales. Se conservan unos 12 mil ejemplares, la mayor parte en reservas y parques naturales, donde son protegidos.
Hace 10 mil años, el guepardo estuvo a punto de desaparecer de la Tierra, víctima de su propia incapacidad para defender las presas que obtiene, e incluso sus propias crías. Según los estudios genéticos más recientes, su reproducción en aquella época se produjo desde un grupo muy reducido, lo que en la actualidad les concede a todos un mapa genético muy parecido. No se ha determinado si ya entonces poseían las cualidades actuales o fueron fruto de la evolución en unas condiciones tan acuciantes para su supervivencia.
Hace 5 mil años fue domesticado para utilizarlo en un tipo de caza deportiva, algo así como un halcón en tierra. Entonces se extendía por India, Siria, Arabia, Palestina, el Magreb y el Sáhara. Los reyes, emperadores, faraones y emires fueron sus mayores defensores por el placer que les otorgaban sus servicios, pero el pueblo llano los cazó sin misericordia para defender sus rebaños.
Acostumbrado a que los carroñeros, como la hiena o el babuino, o incluso otros depredadores como el león o el leopardo, le roben las piezas que caza, el guepardo se ha habituado a cazar en las horas centrales del día, cuando los otros felinos duermen a la sombra de los árboles.
