[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I shot this Black-rumped Flameback at my home town. Everyday early morning and evening just before dusk i could see a group making lot of noise and flying from one coconut palm to other.

The Black-rumped Flameback, (Dinopium benghalense), also known as the Lesser Golden-backed Woodpecker, is a woodpecker which is a widespread and common resident breeder in much of South Asia.

This flameback is a species associated with open forest and cultivation. It nests in a tree hole, laying three white eggs.

Like other woodpeckers, this species has a straight pointed bill, a stiff tail to provide support against tree trunks, and zygodactyl or “yoked" feet, with two toes pointing forward, and two backward. The long tongue can be darted forward to capture insects.

The Black-rumped Flameback is a large species at 26-29 cm in length. It is a typical woodpecker shape, and has a golden yellow back, with paler wings. The rump and tail are black. The underparts are white with dark chevron markings. The black throat immediately separates it from other golden backed woodpeckers in the Indian region. The head is whitish with a black nape and throat, and there is a greyish eye patch. Unlike Greater Flameback, Chrysocolaptes lucidus, it has no dark moustache stripe.

The adult male Black-rumped Flameback has a red crown. Females have a dark forecrown, with red only on the rear half. Young birds are like the female, but duller.

Very interesting subject! You are lucky to have something so beautiful available at predictable times. You should use this to learn how to take shots of it in motion etc. However, you might need a long lens for this. I have not used a powershot so dont know what it is capable of ... good capture nevertheless.

This Woodpecker has an interesting crown, Manoj. I also like those white, bold streaks across its face. Combined with its generally brown plumage, these features make him a good looking specimen.

Hi Manoj,
Wonderful shot with fine details and colours. Though it is a bit pixelled it still retains its beauty. Great use of natural lighting and you have captured a fine pose on the coconut tree. The blue sky as BG works well here. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Hello Manoy,
I've seen the Black-rumped Flameback in Goa but wasn't able to take a good shot so it is nice to see this fine capture well composed on the palm tree trunk with pretty good sharpness against a blue sky BG.

Nice capture. Thogh i see them almost everyday in our compound so far i have not been able to take its picture successfully. i think this one is a male as the red crown is more prominent in this one. Good POV, focus and details.Nice blue background.
