Today, I would like to continue my
Series: ... Satyrinae of the North Italian Alps
Picture: .. no. 11

Species: ... Erebia pandrose (Borkhausen, 1788)
Tribe: ...... Satyrini
Subtribe: .. Erebiina
English: Dewy Ringlet
German: Graubrauner Mohrenfalter

Until recently, Erebia pandrose and Erebia sthennyo (False Dewy Ringlet) were considered different species, with the latter confined to the Pyrenees and Erebia pandrose distributed in the Alps, Appenines, Carpathians, Balkans, Rila-Moutains, northern Scandinavia and in central Asia.
A detailed analysis by Cupedo (2007) has shown, however, that E. sthennyo also occurs in large parts of the southern Alps such as the Bergamask, Lessinic, Venetian, Carnic and Julian Alps. Due to obvious hybridization between pandrose and sthennyo-populations, sthennyo is now considered a subspecies of pandrose only.

In the Ortler-Alps including Val Venosta and Val Martello, Erebia pandrose occurs.

Habitats of pandrose: In the Alps, the species is found above the tree-line upwards from 1800 m on grass slopes.

Forewing length: about 22 mm.

Location: North Italian Alps, Martell-Valley, Kalfanwand, about 2500m.

Ah Peter! You show a species that I have photographed in the Swedish mountains but that was long before I became 'digital'!
This is a fine sharp image showing its underside with excellent detail.
You inspire me to travel the 700km north and take it with my present equipment.
Thanks for sharing this,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hallo Peter,
Dieter

tfs & regards

Grazie,
Marcello

Hello Peter,
